What is EU ETIAS?

ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is a new pre-travel authorisation system being introduced by the European Union. It will be required for nationals of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to Europe, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and many others.

ETIAS is not a visa. It is an electronic authorisation linked to your passport that must be obtained before you travel. The system is designed to strengthen border security and streamline entry into the Schengen Area.

ETIAS is expected to launch in late 2026. Visit ETA Permits to find out more and prepare your application in advance.

Who will need an ETIAS?

ETIAS will be required for nationals of visa-exempt countries — those who currently do not need a visa to visit the Schengen Area. This includes travellers from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and many others.

EU citizens and those who already require a Schengen visa will not need an ETIAS.

Frequently asked questions

When will EU ETIAS launch?
ETIAS is expected to launch in late 2026. The EU has been developing the system for several years and the launch date has been revised a number of times. ETA Permits will begin accepting applications as soon as the system goes live.
Will UK citizens need an ETIAS?
Yes. Following Brexit, British nationals are no longer EU citizens and will require an ETIAS to visit EU and Schengen Area countries for short stays — just like travellers from the US, Canada, and Australia.
Is EU ETIAS the same as a Schengen visa?
No. ETIAS is for people who do not currently need a visa to visit the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa is a separate requirement for nationals of countries that do not have visa-free access to the EU.
How much does ETIAS cost?
The official EU fee for ETIAS is €7 for applicants aged 18 to 70. Children under 18 and adults over 70 are exempt from the fee. ETA Permits charges a service fee for handling and reviewing your application.
How long will my ETIAS be valid?
An approved ETIAS will be valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple short stays in the Schengen Area of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Do I need a separate ETIAS for each EU country I visit?
No. One ETIAS covers all participating Schengen Area countries. You do not need a separate authorisation for each country you plan to visit during your trip.
